"NOMADIC COMMUNITY GARDEN" (c. 05-2014 ~ 11-2019)
FLEET STREET HILL, SHOREDITCH, LONDON, E1  ... in process
[written 10-2018 ~ ]

This is a 'catalogue' of objects that together constitute much of the contents of, and approach to, this so called 'Nomadic Community Garden', which I first visited in March 2018.

Note that none of the external subject-matter (including lighting) was moved or changed for any of this web-site's photos - they are all 'as found' [except the locational positions of the two lenticular-images at the end of 'Area 4']. Some photos are paste-ups (with minimal distortions) of two or (rarely) more photos . Some photos are sharpened and/or tonally enhanced to offset loss of clarity resulting from size reduction of the originals.

The "Nomadic Community Garden" occupies a difficult-to-profitably-develop(?) plot of land in one of London's strongly beating social/creative 'hearts' (Shoreditch). It occupies a triangle that stretches from its pointed west end for 124 widening meters to its 57 meter wide east boundary. The two long sides of this triangular site are bordered by rail-lines that cross each other at its west point. At the south-east corner of the Garden's 57m east boundary is its (gated) vehicle-access, reached via Pedley Street the access-road of a housing estate that fills the triangle's remaining 275 meter broadening eastern end. From this road a narrow pedestrian path to the west squeezes between the Garden's southern fence and the railway's concrete wall, which rises towards its dramatic leap across its older cousin-lines at the triangular site's western point. Here the Garden's pedestrian entrance is located and the narrow path dives south under the bridging railway into a simplistic public-park with a graffitied alley to Brick Lane.

In c2014(?) this abandoned triangle was appropriated and cleared by 'squatters' (with usage permission from its owner-developers) and it has since been continually changed and elaborated.

Unlike the Kew Bridge and Wandsworth improvised urban sites [ref above: 'Index'} the Nomadic Community Garden does not incorporate improvised homes. The "N-C-Garden" is a hub of relatively free activities; a concentrated, enclosed experimental space of creativity (nurturing activities that inevitably spread into its immediate surroundings). Its existence in a crowded city - in which everything tends to be owned, rented, and governed by severe behavioral/usage restrictions wielded by simplistic public or private authorities - is justified (and might become recognised as socially essential) via its role of sustaining a place where behavioral restrictions and norms are more associated with with individual provision and inventiveness, than 'officially' designated, externally administered 'public-space' (parks/streets/buildings). An environment that 1, can be freely used, added-to, and changed by any individual who wishes to perform and collectively share personal creative experiments; and 2, which gifts small garden box-plots (approx 2m-cubed boxes) to local garden-less flat dwellers to grow (usually) vegetables; and 3, which provides semi-organised tutoring in crafts and (overtly or implicitly) in social tolerance.

We very rarely (at least in this culture) have an opportunity to experience environments in which there is no sudden boundary between 'chance'  - eg: "rubbish" and/or objects and materials simply not in use, 'behaving themselves' and unmolested by need and skill. This is a rare treat in a city-environment of 'designers' of 'needed' constructions: architecture, buildings, art-objects, paintings, furniture, roads, paths, and relaxing-places and 'leisure facilities'. There is so rarely a continuum between these 'normally' completely different and kept-separated types of objects, arrangements, formations. Cleanness / hygiene / aesthetic purity / clarity of intention and use demand that our artificial environments are clearly 'functional', confined to our physical uses and aesthetic preferences, unmuddled and unmixed with the untrammelled 'behaviour of the world'.

In late 2019 the N-C-Garden began to destroy itself (watched over by the most magnificent and 'apocalyptic' of all the giant east-end murals to date [see Area-5 below]). This honored a promise to the development company who lent them the site and requested they vacate it, (and who have done nothing with it since).

'Areas' [A1/2/3/4/5/6]:
I have divided the site into six 'Areas' for convenience of reference and depiction. On the ground such divisions are not so obvious - the site is too complex and experientially overwhelming; longitudinally continuous; developmentally arbitrary, to be directly perceived so simplistically. However there does seem to have been a developmental tendency for the triangular site, with its walk-in entrance at its narrow 'pointed' end - to begin like a street, a central strolling space with functional buildings/facilities pushed to its sides (to the site's north and south boundaries). As the triangular site widens this 'street' divides into two: a pedestrian path along the north side, a wider and straighter vehicle road along the south side with a direction and position determined by the pre-existing vehicle entry gate at the site's south-east corner [above pic = low right].

Between these two routes - the 'North-Path', with its N-to-S branching side paths, its tendency to sprout hidden circumventions through its fringing garden (somewhat determined by the slow and close-up perceptions of walkers), and the 'South-Drive' a direct straight driveway tailored for long-vision and simplistic maneuvering - there is a third less defined walkway, a 'Centre-Path' - as the site widens and begins to host real built central structures this path totters west to east through its centre, serving the inner faces of the north and south buildings - and at the site's east end [Area-5] blending with the north-path and opening into the Garden's principal relaxing plus social-mixing plazas.

People and vehicle entries:

1: [Map-pic = low left] the SW-gate: From Allen Gardens (a large flat grass field 63m to the east of Brick Lane and south of the Overground train lines). Walk under the railway through the large graffitied opening in the north wall of Allen Gardens, and the N-C-Garden's SW-gate faces you across the W-end of the long graffitied path that flanks its S side.

2: [Map-pic = low right] the SE corner of the Community Gardens - at the E end of the long graffitied 'South-Path' that flanks its S side - here there is a vehicle gate that is sometimes open: For the intrepid this graffitied E-end (called Fleet Street Hill) can also be reached from the north - over the main railway lines via the graffitied Pedley Street Bridge, accessed via an alley next to 72 Cheshire Street.

THE N-C-GARDEN'S SW-END - APPROACH & ENTRY

Southeast of the intense social activity around Shoreditch High Street station and the north end of Brick Lane there is a rather dismal poplar-fringed field called Allen Gardens, bounded along its north side by the wall of the 'Overground' railway, that here rises towards its elevated station. Through this massive barrier there is a large opening onto a foot-path that runs between the N-C-Garden's south boundary, with its entry gate near its west end, and the inner wall of the railway. This footpath debouches at its east end onto Fleet St Hill and Pedley Street.

By now the entirety of this huge barrier-wall is graffitied. At the E-side of the tunnel it memorializes a famous graffitist.

This location, that is completely publically accessible and almost totally publically accepting of blatant personal exhibitionism, here displays a rare single 'whole-area' painting, presumably recently completed as still in an un-tagged state, made by someone who has become an established 'street-artist' by successfully limiting his fantasy subject-matter and style.

'AREA 1' - THE N-C-GARDEN'S WEST-END.  ITS 'WEST-POINT' WIDENS INTO AN OPEN-SPACE 'ENTRY-PLAZA' WITH EMPLACEMENTS ALONG ITS N & S EDGES

AREA-1 - 'ENTRY-PLAZA':  AN OPEN CENTRAL SPACE
WITH SOCIAL FACILITIES ALONG ITS EDGES - WHOSE BORDERS ARE CONSTRAINED BY RAILWAYS THAT CROSS EACH OTHER AT ITS 'WEST- POINT'

The portion of the N-C-Garden that I call 'Area-1' starts at the sharp 'West-Point' of the whole triangular Garden site. On the south side of the Garden near this 'West-Point', is its main public entry/exit gate. From its 'West-Point', for approx 36m to the east, the site is too narrow to conveniently accommodate structures in its centre. Area-1 has thus become an entry-courtyard-like space edged with, on its N-side an ad hoc line of sit-places and various invented objects along its graffitied N-boundary wall and on its S-side a 'procession' of practical built structures that comprise a gift-exchange store-hut; a sit-place; a quite complex cafe; a childrens' play-place furnished with a grounded boat, and finally a second small sit-place at its SE-corner. [At its E-end the triangular Garden site has broadened sufficiently to accommodate central structures in addition to edge facilities - I name this 'Area-2'].

(paste-up 2-pics 27-10-2018 / to WWS)

In the picture above we are looking west, standing on the 'Entry-Plaza' approx 33m from "West-Point" the western 'beginning-point' of the whole triangular N-C-Garden site.

N-C-GARDEN [AREA-1) -  SITE W-END: 'ENTRY-PLAZA'  - VIEW TO EAST                                                                          ^ Area-1 to Area-2 Notice-Board (behind man in a blue shirr)
(paste-up 2 pics 25-03-2018 / to EEN) .

We are standing approx 18m east from the West-Point of Area-1, facing down the east portion of its central 'Entry-Plaza' to a place where one encounters an environment of a different character: the denser and more complex Areas-2/-3/-4/-5/-6. At that transition, as if announcing the termination of Area-1, there is a central notice-board (glimpsed in this pic behind the man in a blue shirt) beyond which the site has widened enough to accommodate large and complex central as well as peripheral structures, separated and accessed via peripheral and central pathways.

AREA-1 : THE ENTRY-PLAZA'S NORTH EDGE WALL & EMPLACEMENTS - STARTING FROM THE N-C-GARDEN'S 'WEST-POINT'

Starting at 'West-Point' we traverse Area-1's N-edge to its east end - passing its sculptures, sitting-places, and its frequently repainted graffitied wall.

(

Looking into the extreme west point of the N-C-Garden site - where the Area's N-wall passes behind hoardings that clad the S-wall. Here a strange (unintentional) visual illusion exists -  the cream and white boards supporting the graffiti are denied their solidity by an apparently floating-in-space 'wobble-line' above the "ST": a chance visual 'trick' of the mark's apparent perspective relative to that of the boards that actually support it, the (physical) freedom of the sprayed mark from the physical division of its board supports, the apparent vertical solidity and independence of the black-edged silver letters.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1)THE NORTH WALL WITH VARIOUS SIT PLACES - VIEW FROM NEAR ITS EAST END
(pic 29-04-2018 / to WWN)

Opposite the cafe and boat, the north side of 'Area-1' is barriered with a long wall (that screens the Garden from the main rail lines to Liverpool Street). In spite of representing a huge effort of painting, the graffiti decor on this whole long wall has been changed (at least) three times in 2018.

Area-1's north side wall (relatively unobstructed and thus attractive to graffitists) backs a muddle of small-scale inventions and conveniences: sit-places with tables, small objects of useful function (litter-bins; notices; a cash-box; plant-containers), and objects of no practical use ('art' sculptures and 'doodles').

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1) N-SIDE:  THE NORTH WALL - VIEW FROM NEAR ITS WEST END
(pic 11-05-2018 / to NE)

The painting is changing again - a more assertive (but graffitiesquely more conventional) character has painted over the "WELCOME TO" portion of the previous message - sparing "PARADISE".

An example of the limited number of shape-resources both intentional and natural in this world. In the above pic the 2D painted shape of the lower-right corner of the wall-graffiti resembles a 'fang', and in the previous pic, on the rear side of the nearby 'Post-Cards' hut there is a torn old notice that has a weirdly similar 3D 'fang' curl at its lower-right torn corner.

The wall painting has changed again and a somewhat more stable wooden roof is being added to the wooden planks that reinforced the former rather flimsy manufactured enclosure [see previous pic]. This sitting-place has now come under the aegis of the cafe that faces it from the S-side.

One 'sit-bay' east from the previous 'sit-shelter' - at the east end of the N-wall - is another (but un-roofed) sit-place, shown in the next 3 pics undergoing a progressive development during 11 months. It may of course, at any time, be overtaken by some different initiative, or degenerate via lack of use and interest.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1) N-SIDE:  OPEN SIT PLACE AT THE NORTH-EAST END OF AREA-1

Here a socially-shared sitting place has clarified-out of a more tenuous//provisional version [ref the previous pic - 7 months earlier] that is not yet finally demarcated//separated from a loose muddle of objects and functions. This is how potentials are both realised and simultaneously pruned, lost, simplified.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1) N-SIDE:  OPEN THE SIT PLACE AT THE NORTH-EAST END OF AREA-1

During last 4 months the seats and tables that backed onto the wall (plus probably other items now in the foreground) were moved into rather haphazard positions onto the fronting path. The other two seats and two tables have retained their positions. Presumably the changes (plus the removal of a bush) cleared work-space for the ambitious new wall paintings.

An exquisitely balanced chance ensemble of striped-seat and striped-lost-purse. The purse's position angled across the inner margin of the seat's only coloured strip, 'floating between the white and black tags, its angled stripe precisely crossing the green border at an angle that emphasises (and perhaps 'endorses' with money!) their white to black left to right motion across the planks, binding them together across the (already) dynamic form of the chair (especially as seen from any angle outside precisely central!).

AREA-1 :  THE ENTRY-PLAZA'S SOUTH-EDGE  EMPLACEMENTS - STARTING AT THE N-C-GARDEN'S SW-ENTRY>< EXIT DOOR

We now explore Area-1's S-side. Moving east from the Garden's SW-entry door we encounter a sequence of five practical social emplacements. First is the Gift-Exchange hut; next a graffitied sit-place; then a Cafe (dining-hut / cooking-van / outside seating-area); then a Boat-Play-Place - an elaborate selection of fascinating childrens' adventures; finally - ending this succession of things-to-do - there is a small sit-place from which one may oversee the S-side of the Boat-Play-Place and contemplate the complexity of Area-1.

In this environment of visual primacy where objects' functions tend to be obscured under a plethora of frequently changing visual relatings; where we are relatively freed from recognising and separating objects by their use - the co-incidence of the bent sleeved-arm and bent smoke-flu (holding in tension the picture between them and simultaneously demonstrating the function of creasing) is a 'normal-awareness' observation.

The boat play-place is
the last in a row of three installations with differing functions strung along the S-side of Area-1, from the site's entry at its west-end; the 'gift-exchange' hut; the cafe, and this boat-playground. From here to the east-end the whole space between the 'south-drive' and the site's boundary-fence is filled with allotment planter-boxes gifted to local flat-dwellers [ref 'Area-6'].

We are standing in a central sit-place at the start of 'Area-2' - located directly behind the large info-notice board that signals the east limit of Area-1 [see below]. This sit-place seems to have grown in conjunction with the boat play-place, sharing its decorative style and in particular its large colour-striped timber 'spatial-demarcation' blocks.

'AREA 2' - THE FIRST OF FOUR 'AREAS' WITH CENTRAL EMPLACEMENTS & BUILDINGS    ... in process

The widening of the triangular site towards the east is now sufficient to accommodate free-standing placements in the centre of the site as well as on both sides. This has initiated a proliferation of structures - from now on the N-C-Garden site is filled with sit-places, garden-plots, improvised-objects and especially invented buildings that fulfill manifold functions.

The central development begins in 'Area-2', behind the large info-board at the east end of Area-1, with groups of plant-boxes and sitting-places. East of these Area-2 hosts the site's first improvised buildings that occupy its centre - on the north side (adjoining the north-path) is a caravan submerged under wooden-cladding and accreted structural extensions, probably made as an 'events centre and kitchen'{?}, on the south-side is an agglomerated building housing a barbecue and providing sheltered social sitting places. These two buildings are separated by a central path that starts as a shrunk remainder of the Area-1 central plaza, and are flanked north and south by the North-Path and the South-Drive (a vehicle access) - these three routes persist through the next two Areas until they merge into the complex social spaces of Area-5 (at the site's east end).

Here we are at the centre of Area-1 (the site's 'entry-plaza'), facing its east-end and the start of Area-2 - signalled by a notice-board (conveying information on the N-C-Garden's history). Beyond this notice-board the continuous widening of the triangular site has allowed a much denser development of facilities, all the way through Areas-2, -3, -4, -5, to the east end.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-2) W-END  - THE INFO NOTICE-BOARD + VIEWS ALONG THE SOUTH & CENTRE PATHS INTO AREA-2 & 3  - ( VIEW FROM E END OF AREA-1)
(pic 27-10-2018 / to EES)

This notice-board is the first central structure accommodated by the widening of the triangular N-C-Garden site towards the east. The structures and facilities that occupy the centre of the N-C-Garden through Areas-2, -3, -4, -5, extend from the group of wooden-box planters and seating that back onto this notice-board.

At this location the central open plaza of Arrea-1 splits into 3 paths - one the 'North-Path' along the whole length of the site's north edge (see below), and the two paths that flank this notice: on its left-side is the 'Centre Path' that winds between the north and south buildings of Areas-2, -3, -4, on its right-side is the 'South Drive' that enables vehicle-access from the site's SE gate.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-2) W-END  -  INFO NOTICE-BOARD - (VIEW AT E-END OF AREA-1)
(pic 28-09-2018 / to EES)

During the ensuing 6 months [ref previous pic] this notice board has acquired two new messages -  (revealing this loose community's broad tolerance of personality types and individually motivated actions) - a sentimental commercial icon of a teen-girl-guitarist asserting the ultimate profundity of "Me" and an astonishingly undecipherable 'instructional' notice opportunistically screwed to the board's frame

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-2) W-END  -  INFO NOTICE-BOARD - ( VIEW AT E-END OF AREA-1)
(pic 22-02-2019 / to EEN)

During the ensuing 5 months the 'instructional' but undecipherable litter-notice [ref previous pic] has been replaced by a wooden storage-bin sporting a wooden illustration of a cute little kitsch fence (probably a retrieved litter-object that has at last found ironic status).

During the ensuing 4 months the store-bin has
lost its cute-fence-front [ref previous pic] to a huge 'gesturing' multi-armed log (previously standing at its right side and now replaced there by a planter-box).

Behind the Notice-Board we can see the inception of the site's 'Centre-Path' which divides north & south buildings until it reaches Area-5 and expands into the big 'Community-Plaza'.

PATH 1:  THE 'NORTH PATH' & AREA-2  NORTH-BUILDING

The big central notice-board [shown in pictures above] and in this pic left, terminates the open central space of Area-1, which here shrinks into 3 paths. Starting on the south side of the central notice-board is the 'South-Drive', at its north side there begins the wandering 'Centre-Path', and here, starting at the NE corner of Area-1, is the start of the 'North-Path' - which starting at the NW corner of Area-2, fringes the Garden's north edge all the way to its final east-end.

We will start to explore Area-2 from this north edge path.

In early 2018 this figure was the 'guardian' of the most traveled pathway into 'Area-2' - the 'N-Path'.

(By 5th April the sculpture had been moved close to the N-wall; by May 1st it had been removed; now in June 2019 it is appears again, but near the site's W-entrance).

The erratic scatter of sitting-places, plantings and sculptural objects along the north-edge of Area-1 (that vaguely face across its open space towards its boat play-place, cafe, and site entry) continues along the north edge of Area-2. Here however here they are more definitively inventive, useful and oriented than those in Area-1. In Area-2 they fringe a well-used path running between its N-boundary and its central building complexes, which serves as a defined route from the site's entry to its main communal gathering place, the east-end 'Area-5' 'plaza'.

A 'hobby' - the
training of 'bush-arches' - punctuates the north-edge garden along the whole width//length of Area-2, beginning here at its western end. However, even more interesting than this somewhat common game of sculpting bushes, is an act of gratuitous creativity that laid three planks diagonally across the north-edge garden's western end, under and through the first bush-arch, as if to sarcastically emphasise a direct and speedy (but far too tiny) ceremonious alternative inception of a straight portion of the north-edge path [see next pics].

One of the basic and rich aspects of this environment is that every object is very easily perceived as having the same status as every other - every thing becomes simply a form and tends to loose its comparative status in terms of qualitative meanings, value, usefulness, attractiveness, beauty. Thus the visual similarities and visual differences of things become more important than their functionality and value. A fascinating world of seeing from large to tiny. a plethora of decisions of all types but all equally communicative.

In this pic the elegant table-support shown in the next pic is in use with a (random) board top.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-2): SOUTH BUILDING - N FACADE - A TABLE WITHOUT A TOP - (ON CENTRE-PATH)

(pic 02-03-2019 / to S)

The peculiar elegance of this object partly derives from:

1st:
That it cannot obviously be limited: Its lack of a "table-top" enables its instant brain-catagorisation as "a Table" to falter - it thus cannot be immediately confined in the list/brain-area of object type-recognition - its purpose, constructions, forms remain conceptually open - it joins more easily with 'chance'.

2nd:
However, it has almost complete visibility (rather than 'visible completeness'). Every part participates in its visible//formal wholeness - is (almost) equally visible, thus all the relations between its parts are simultaneously comprehensible (it is perceived as a single form).

3rd:
The object appears to have been assembled from found parts primarily chosen for constructional convenience -- for instance the colors don't seem chosen, thus it is not the restrictive-practices of taste and training that are confining its forms//chance configurations. 'Naturalness' is a condition of openness to context/surroundings - even one may say 'surrounding world'! Such an object 'joins-in' (and '-out'), its boundaries are relatively unlimited ... it has 'subtle-differentiation'.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-3): SOUTH BUILDING +VAN - (VIEW FROM N><S-PATH BETWEEN AREA-2 & AREA-3)
(pic 13-03-2019 / to SW)

This van seems an extension of its neighbour building - it changes its external patterning but (in my experience) never moves. I have no knowledge of its function - is it bedroom / storage-cupboard / a graffitists 'canvas' / or just awaiting a transport job.

A site-typical collection of large disrelated forms supporting arbitrary decorations.

There are several gaps in the building's walls. In this NE-corner, through the top of the triangular gap in the building's construction [pic: rt-side] the camera sees the interior view in the next pic.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-2): SOUTH BUILDING - INTERIOR VIEW THROUGH NE-CORNER
(pic 12-02-2019 / to SW)

This interior view is what the camera sees through the top of the triangular gap in the building's wall [previous pic - right side]: a room seemingly dedicated to spray- and brush-painting ... across its north-wall curiously dominated by a huge (grey-scale) painted eye, itself transformed into a huge phantasmagoric face of blue (hung-bags) eyes, white (hung-bag) nose and brown protruding (folded-futon) tongue - staring seemingly insultingly across the space at the opposite metal work-table. I presume this was not an intentional image?

The same interior seen through a gap in the woodwork at the left (north) end of the west facade. The blue/white/brown phantasmagoric face curiously echoed and seemingly emphatically emphasised by an east-wall painting of an identically orientated staring beaked head! I presume that this coincidence was also not intentional?

The first appearance of constructions on the widening centre space of the triangular site. Two central planters + sit-places extend eastwards towards Area-2's south-building from the rear of the big notice-board that signals the east end of Area-1. They skirt the north-side of the S-drive, facing across it to the Area-1 boat play-place and the west end of the Area-6 south-planter zone. The rich variety and positioning of its seating suggests locational connection with these zones.

The story of the South-Drive continues from Area-2 South-Building, through Areas-3, -4,.-5, -6 to the N-C-Garden's SE gate.

[Note that the next pic shows the S-Drive viewed from the south face of Area-2's S-Building (shown here)].

We are looking back to the west origin of the South-Drive. Along the pic's right side is the south edge of Area-2's social-spaces; on its left side is construction material that litters the edge of Area-6 (the Garden's south-boundary allotment strip of box-planters (etc.)). In the distance - beyond the Info-Sign at the west end of Area-2 - a crowd of site visitors throng Area-1's entry area.

The
scaffolding for this in-progress, planned but incomplete, high-terrace was probably scavenged from the large 'tent-hut' that recently stood opposite its site [ref: 'Area-6' 'S-Edge Planter Group']. People were sitting up on its (probably) boarded deck some weeks later, seemingly relaxing [alas no photo].

This is probably an improvised seat, now broken and upended, left on the south-drive as (temporary) litter. It has become a monument to mixed sources-of-action: a 'Rietveldian' minimal structure on which dynamic natural forces have been allowed (via some human mis-calculation of rigidity) to impose their un-rationally-directed actions. The resulting object - an unhappy marriage of intention joined to chance, excites our human interest and exciting sense of duality and challenges the surrounding city-objects (monuments to "Single vision and Newton's sleep") and the litter of practical inventions (seats, boxes and more complex structures) that have successfully achieved an at least formal independence from natural actions/behaviour and a relative imperviousness to temporal change.

.'AREA 3' - THE SECOND OF FOUR 'AREAS' WITH CENTRAL BUILDINGS

Separated from 'Area-2' by the first of three north-to-south walkways, what I call 'Area-3' includes two elaborate building agglomerations. The north building-group has two main components - adjoining the north-pathway are four self-contained chemical toilets, backing them to the south is a substantial single-volume studio/headquarters/storage and exhibition space for graffiti-painters. The south portion of 'Area-3' is problematic, during almost a year (05-2018 to 04-2019).of visiting and recording no 'building' type of structure was added to the complex of functional areas that constituted this zone, and yet the ariel photo, dated 'late 2018', shows something resembling a roof - this conundrum is unsolved. During my visits this site was rather chaotic, consisting of a complex of open-air spaces: social sit places, work-spaces, a planter-box 'garden', and wood dumps.

Note that, what I perceived in 12-02-2018 as an Area-5 SW-garden sit-place ''extension' into Area-6 is now, in 13-03-2019 simply an Area-6 store-space. This radical destruction of what appeared as a rather useful 'meeting-room' is typical of this 'Garden of free, fast, and possibly minimally-consulted initiatives'; given time this may prove to be a transitory pause..

'AREA 4' - THE THIRD OF THREE 'AREAS' WITH CENTRAL EMPLACEMENTS & BUILDINGS

Area-4 hosts the most complex buildings. The N-building's largest enclosure is the N-C-Garden's biggest construction-materials store-space which fills the N-building's volume to its outer facades on three-sides, N, W, E. At the NE corner a small hut juts from the store-space's east-facade line - it's a kind of 'studio-store' of parts for constructing and mending bikes; at the SE corner another larger projection includes a dog's house and a semi-open piano-veranda at its SE-corner. Its south side, mostly facing the S-building's Bar across a roofed portion of the site's W-to-E path, is a row of closed and locked small volumes with unknown functions. The S-building is a large Bar backed by a less differentiated area of sitting-places, a bee enclosure, sculptures and plant-boxes.

The sequence of this tour of Area-4's N and S buildings is:
1: N-Building:
    - The SW corner
    - W-facade from its SW-corner to its NW-corner
    - N-facade and N-edge garden from its NW-corner to its NE-corner
    - E-facade from its NE-corner bike-repair hut, via the big construction-materials store, to its SE-corner  piano-veranda.
2: E-to-W path between north and south buildings
    - From E to W end.
3: S-Building:
    - W-face to SW corner, across S-face to SE-corner, up the E-face to bar.

North-Building: the sequence along the N-end of the N-to-S-Path, starting at its north end where it enters from the W-to-Path (right edge of picture):

- pic right - a shed for recycled bikes and bike-parts.

- pic cntr - behind the E-wall (+ E-entry door) is the site's largest store-space (for construction-materials). Much of the store's E-wall is set back from the 'building-line', allowing an open work-space in front of it.

- pic left - projecting forwards again is first the dog's home with a North-facing wall and window. This block continues west as enclosed and covered spaces accessed from inside the store.

- pic left - then, at the SE-corner of this N-building-group, is a veranda-like space furnished with a piano and books. (Beyond this the E-to-W centre-path debouches into the site's 'Area 5' community/social space.)

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-4): NORTH BUILDING - CONSTRUCTION-STORE EXTERIOR - E-FACE (NON-WALLED - E-ENTRY IS OPEN)
(pic 11-05-2018 / to WWN)

At this time the forecourt of the Store was cluttered with large objects (mostly water-tanks) that served to partially wall it. It had no enclosing-wall or door - the Store seemed relatively continuous with its immediate surroundings - simply a more congested portion of the whole maze-like N-C-Garden, however when I wandered in the Store I was asked to leave, and on a subsequent visit it was walled with a locking door (see below).

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-4): NORTH BUILDING - E-FACADE N-END - BIKE-HUT & BIKE-MENDING

(pic 11-05-2018 / NW)

This is the north end of the space that becomes the N><S Path between Area-4 and Area-5. This, and the next picture, show its state
prior to the big 2019 pic above. The view (on this pics right-side) is through its opening onto the cobbled W-to-E-Path with its complex N-wall emplacements. The elaborately painted hut (pic centre) is used to store and mend bikes, this work has spilled onto the yard-like pebbled space before it. its painted decoration has since been simplified (see pics above and below).

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-4): NORTH BUILDING - E-FACADE NE-CORNER - BIKE-HUT & BIKE-MENDING STORE

At the north end of the S-to-N path is a hut used for mending bikes. Now painted blue and simplified in its decoration it has become visually continuous with the Store's new W-face wall and entry door (see large pic above)..

Just inside the construction-store looking back at its closed E-entry door that is visually blocked with a plastic curtain. Because it is usually a locked zone ('forbidden' to visitors; in those who are aware of its existence the enclosed zone can evoke a modicum of curiosity.

Notice that the only thing here that is not in harmony with this spontaneous multiplicity of objects - that indeed appears to have diminished them from manifestations of disparate personal activity that was its own adventure and satisfaction, into a mere illustration
of the objects and activity they actually are! - made them indeed into a mere 'setting' designed to wow the type of consumer who would be enticed by the type of culture they represent ... the type of culture indeed that actually realised them!, is the imported commercial label: "MUUSIC.FM THE DJ'S DIGITAL NETWORK" that now fronts the bar and which was set up, with its heralded equipment, by a man who intended to transform this Bar (which faces the N-C-Garden's main E-end social-space) into a music 'broadcasting' facility. Before he began his 'performance' however he was asked (politely and reasonably) to remove his equipment, as the venue he had invaded is not intended as an environment for public commercial enterprise.

An example of a strange visual effect (typical in an environment as complex and unorganised as this): the orange/texted bar-door appears to have a little peep-hole with a grating (like an old-fashioned prison). The grating however is [see next pic] a trellis on the far side of the bar-space. Its size is scaled to what one would expect for the foreground door, but that is simply a scaling via distance. Simple position/scale illusions are common in such a disparate complexity (this one is somewhat dependent on eye focus: however the change in focal length from 4.5m to the near door are presumably summed-together, ignored in the brain (perhaps directed by the authority of the pictorial stereotype of 'ancient prison door').

images were still on the bar-counter. Like many fascinating and many ordinary objects in the Garden they were simply there, seemingly not owned; unprotected from theft and with no specified position.

'AREA 5' - THIS IS THE FOURTH & LAST 'AREA' EDGED BY THE 'NORTH-PATH' THAT CONFINES A COMPLEX RIBBON OF GARDENS & SOCIAL STRUCTURES ALONG THE SITE'S N-BOUNDARY.  IN ITS CENTRE & SOUTH IT HOSTS THE N-C-GARDEN'S PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY BUILDING: THE 'OPERA' WITH ITS RELATED SOUTH & EAST SOCIAL-PLAZAS.  ITS EAST WALL, ALMOST COVERED WITH A GIGANTIC MURAL, IS A PORTION OF THE N-C-GARDEN'S EAST BOUNDARY.

The social-plaza has devolved into two joined zones, semi-separated by two steps and flower and seat borders - the west portion that focuses sociality with its ambiguous and fascinating "Opera" building and open-hearthed fire, and the east plaza which fronts (like a stage) the huge and magnificent mural (re-painted at least every 18 months) that covers the site's east-wall (that of a 19thC rail viaduct tunnel) and is glimpsed from every part of it - the visual climax and horizon of the entire N-C-Garden site

This last, most easterly portion of the N-C-Garden is divided into two areas. Area-5: the northern social half (which claims the central one-third of the site's east end - at the wide 'base' of its triangle), and the southern practical half filled with gardeners' planter-boxes constituting the main part of 'Area-6', the E and S allotment portions of the N-C-Garden site
are shown in the next section: Area-6.

The N-to-S path [ref the first pic] emerges onto the N-edge path just beyond the blue-backed board [pic right-side / ref next pic].

SOCIAL-PLAZAS 'WEST' & 'EAST'

The social-plaza has devolved into two zones, semi-separated by two steps and flower and seat borders. The plaza's west portion is socially focused by its ambiguous and fascinating north-side "Opera" building [see above] and by its central open-hearthed fire. Its east portion fronts (like a stage) the huge and magnificent mural (re-painted at least every 18 months) that covers the site's east-wall (that of a 19th C rail viaduct tunnel) The mural is the visual climax and east-end horizon of the entire N-C-Garden site.

SOCIAL-PLAZA-W - The largest plaza - E-to-W approx 22.25 m / N-to-S approx 13.0m (from Opera veranda front to S-edge)
SOCIAL-PLAZA-E - The smaller plaza - MURAL-PAINTING: width approx 18.12m]

SOCIAL-PLAZA-WEST  - We will first enter it via the N-to-S path between Area-4 and Area-5. This exits onto the Plaza-W at the south-west corner of the Opera building.

The building of the Opera's room-2 is completed and the once separate NW-corner wc structures are now an integrated part of the main Opera building (entry to them is on the N-edge path, glimpsed through the N><S path's N-end exit [pic left]).

On the left side are Area-4 facilities: dog's home; construction-store's work-area; bike-mending hut. At the far-end is the entry from the site's N-edge path. We are standing on the path's exit onto the Social-Plaza-W [Note that on the ground is the same cable and white log as in the next pic].

N-C-GARDEN [AREA-5): 'OPERA' BUILDING - VERANDA SW-CORNER + SOCIAL-PLAZA (W) - W-EDGE + A REMARKABLE OBJECT
(pic 28-09-2018 / to SSW)

Four translucent-plastic tubs and an opaque black watering-can are grouped together on a wheel-barrow between me and the afternoon sun. The arrangement produces an unusual effect - the internal glowing of the light-diffusing plastic tubs silhouettes the black can that casually leans against them. Their peculiar luminescing (that isolates the tubs within the whole view) plus the flattening of the can into a 'drawing' or 'projection' is a sufficiently rare phenomenon (at least for me) as to seem eerie. Its seemingly unique 'power' and apparent 'mode of being' contrasts with all other constituents of the view.

N-C-GARDEN [AREA-5): 'OPERA' BUILDING - VERANDA SW-CORNER + SOCIAL-PLAZA (W) - A REMARKABLE OBJECT
(
paste-up 2-pics 28-09-2018 / to SSW)

The shapes of the watering-can and wheel-barrow appear to correspond in spite of the disconcerting irrelation of their dimensionality. The resulting visual/psychic strain is enhanced by the apparent endorsement of the 'reality-denying' affects of the barrow's weird contents by the graffitied love-hearts!

The 'shape-correspondences' of watering-can / wheel-barrow / heart-shaped graffiti, appear to have enrolled their neighbours - the plinth-like table-support and the handles of the abasing door(?) -
as their shape-resonant acolytes.

N-C-GARDEN [AREA-5): SOCIAL-PLAZA-W ( - SW-CORNER + ETC - TYRE SEAT(?)
(pic 28-09-2018 / to SW)

Probably a semi-failed practical improvisation - perhaps of a low-seat. Maybe the worth of the result did not justify the
too unwieldy method - weaving rubber-straps (inner-tubes?) around this awkward and heavy object.

One doesn't see these beautiful objects behaving 'in the wild' in 'well organised' parks ...in public-environments the 'natural behaviour' of most inanimate and practical objects is constrained.

The painted 'windows' flanking the entry-door reveal a painted caravan 'interior' with 'views' through two painted windows on its south side which 'reveal' (a 'continuation' of) the railway structures and fringing trees which constitute the site's south boundary. The whole facade was painted by Salim (designer and builder of the 'Opera' building which faces it across the west plaza and from which the trompe l'oeil 'rear-window views' may be seen in a focussed-continuity with the reality to each side of the caravan.

The Garden is no longer open to anyone who discovers it, and portions of its center have been demolished (some say to demonstrate to its developer-owners that the Garden's originators/creators are willing to keep their promise to move - that they can be trusted with similar temporary custodianships elsewhere).

'AREA 6' - THE SOUTH-EAST & SOUTH ALLOTMENT PORTIONS OF THE N-C-GARDEN SITE

South of Area-5, between it and the Garden site's S-edge - screening it from the S-road, the SE vehicle gate and the S-boundary fence - is the N-C-Garden's most densely practical portion: 'Area-6', filled with planter-boxes assigned to local flat-dwellers

Area-6 is the portion of the site equipped with wooden plant-growing boxes (averaging around 160cm x 112cm) which are individually gifted to local gardenless flat-dwellers as micro-allotments. These garden-boxes densely occupy S and SE portions of the N-C-Garden site: they fill the long strip between the south-drive and the south-perimeter fence (from the east end of the boat play-area to the SE vehicle-gate) and on the S-drive's north side they fill a big triangular area starting at the S-fringe of Area-4, beyond the S-edge of Area-5 filling a large area to the site's E-boundary and SE corner. This long and broadening strip effectively functions as an enclosing 'buffer-zone', a planted 'forest' of closely spaced plant-sprouting boxes, sheltering//isolating the site's main social spaces (especially Area-5), blocking 'experiential-leakage' out through the site's S-edge and its SE vehicle-gate and into the depressing 'empty-zone' outside the Garden - especially the 'negation-planning' of Pedley Street's a-social housing and ad-hoc light industries.

This SE-corner allotment area begins its accumulation on the S-fringe of Area-4 with a bee-compound and ten plant-boxes. Beyond the N-to-S path that separates Area-4 from Area-5 - fringing the communal fire-hearth on its N-side and effectively separating Area-5's communal plaza (with its N-end "Opera House") from the practical environs of the S-drive - about 35 plant-boxes form a tight group. Finally, beyond the last of the N-to-S paths, an agglomeration of approx 60 plant-boxes, are packed into an almost square group between the SE-corner vehicle-entry gate and the stage-like space that fronts the great mural.

Here, at this W-planter-group's SW-corner, one can see across the N-to-S path (between Area-6 and Area-4) a small 'satellite group' of planters at the S-tip of Area-4.

The Area-6 planter-group is dedicated to cultivation in box-sized allotments that stretch to the east boundary of the N-C-Garden site. These are used by inhabitants of the flats in Pedley St (beyond the SE corner of the N-C-Garden).

(NB: the improvised seat, made of a kitchy bed-end(?) and clumsily painted scrap wood - an extreme contrast that creates an interestingly 'vulgar' and sarcastic work.).

THE N-C-GARDEN'S E-END ENTRY & DEPARTURE ROUTES

Though the N-C-Garden is an autonomous entity - discovered and conceptually initiated by an individual(??) and organised, built and 'furnished' by a freely co-operating group - it passively influences and extends 'creative permission' into its immediate surroundings, which (partly because they are only sparsely used by the 'general public') are continuous in terms of graffitied decoration with the densely painted N-C-Garden. Influenced by this I have bracketed my recording of the Garden itself with recordings of the two routes that lead to it and from it.

It is also possible to access the N-C-Garden from the NE: Next to 72 Cheshire Street is a yard with entry to the (graffitied) Pedley Street Bridge over the main railway which fringes the N-C-Garden's north side. One descends from the bridge onto Fleet Street Hill and walks through a densely graffitied, probably 19thC tunnel to its south end at Pedley Street. Here, at the N-C-Garden's SE corner is its vehicle-entry-gate which is sometimes open. If this is closed turn right along the S-path between the Garden's S-side fence and the (continuously graffitied) concrete wall of the elevated railway - at its far end you will discover the Garden's SW entry gate. [ref at start: 'Approach and entry to its west end'].

(paste-up 2-pics 05-04-2018 / to NW)

Beside the Garden's south-fence (pic-left) runs a public path (the 'S-Path), that at it's and the Garden's west ends, turns south under the railway and issues into Allan Gardens (a short walk to Brick Lane). Here we are standing on the junction of Pedley Street (a vehicle road to Vallance Rd.), and north up Fleet Street Hill (+ a tunnel + a pedestrian bridge over the railway + a descent into Cheshire Street).
