TOWER OF PISA - ILLUSTRATION IN "WONDERS OF THE WORLD" ENCYCLOPEDIA
- 19##
(pic ##)
This is possibly a photo that has been heavily
retouched with a stormy sunset presumably to 'romanticise' the tower and enhance its
stereotypical fascination. It's rather disgracefully inserted into a childrens
knowledge book, implying the image depicts external reality. Indeed the
caption seems at pains to co-operate with the book's serious demeanor - it is severely
de-romanticising, hypocritically and absurdly insisting that the tower's "slant" makes no
contribution to its status as a "wonder of the world"

TOWER OF PISA (14C / 56m) - PIAZZA DEL DUOMO, PISA, ITALY - VIEW EEN)
(pic 29-04-2015)
Viewing the real tower relatively strips it of its elaborate mental aura - its 'ordinariness', its physicality, its in-process' restoration, its payment for climbing it, its mass of tourist visitors, ones slight physical
vertigo/nausea as ones eye ascends it, all attest to its 'ordinary physicality'.
It's disappointing, as it shows that wonder is usually inflated unless discovered unannounced !
Only with its external reality suppressed
can its mnemonic forms flourish.
