On peut également y lire "Si vis pacem, para pacem", soit "si tu veux la paix, prépare la paix" et "Maudite soit la guerre et ses auteurs". Le monument n'a jamais été inauguré officiellement par l’autorité préfectorale, il fut en butte à des critiques féroces et a souffert de nombreux actes de vandalisme dans les années 30 (attribués à l’Action Française).
